• 7/7/10: I'll be giving my Mars talk at the Mars Society's annual convention (August 5-8 in Dayton, Ohio). I'll be presenting to the whole convention right after Robert Zubrin opens the event! My Realms of Fantasy story "Joy is the Serious Business of Heaven" was selected as an Honorable Mention by Gardner Dozois in his Year's Best SF. And the September 2010 Analog, Interzone 228, Alembical 2, and Escape Pod episode 240, all with stories by me, are now available.
• 5/6/10: My unpublished story "Citizen-Astronaut" won Second Prize in the 2010 Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest. My story "Galactic Stress" was named one of the Notable Stories of 2009 for the storySouth Million Writers Award. Alembical 2, including my novella "Second Chance," is now available for pre-order and got a starred review from Publishers Weekly. And the sixty-minute Tech Talk about my trip to "Mars" I presented to the engineers at Google is now available on YouTube.
• 4/22/10: Alembical 2 from Paper Golem Press, which includes my novella "Second Chance," will be launching at Balticon at the end of May. May should also see the publication of Interzone 228, including my story "A Passion for Art;" the anthology Légendes, including the French translation of "Tale of the Golden Eagle;" and the May issue of Laptop, including a "Burning Question" section with a short essay by me about futuristic technology. Also, in the April Locus, Rich Horton gave my story "Teaching the Pig to Sing" a Recommended review.

• 3/30/10: I've participated in an SF Signal "Mind Meld" about The Best Aliens in SF and a Laptop Magazine "Burning Question" about Technology That Makes You Feel Like You're Living in the Future.
• 3/29/10: The Drabblecast podcast of my story "Babel Probe" won the People's Choice Award for Best Story of the Year! My story "Teaching the Pig to Sing" appeared in the May 2010 issue of Analog, my non-fiction essay "How the Future Predicts Science Fiction" appeared in the final issue of The Internet Review of Science Fiction, and "Wind from a Dying Star" appeared on Escape Pod (available as an MP3 file or via iTunes) and got some nice comments in the Escape Pod forums. I also sold "The Last McDougal's" to Escape Pod for a future podcast. I've also added some Upcoming Appearances below, including a talk about my trip to "Mars" at Powell's Technical Books in Portland.
• 2/6/10: My story "horrorhouse" made the BSFA Award longlist. "horrorhouse" might also be (re)printed in a forthcoming paper version of DayBreak... I'll keep you informed of any progress. The cover and final ToC of Retro Spec, including a reprint of my story "Nucleon," have also been announced... it's scheduled for publication in October 2010. And I got a nice wooden base made for my Endeavour Award.
• 1/28/10: I have returned safely from Mars! See my Mars journal for stories and photos. Also, Rich Horton of Locus calls "Aggro Radius" in Gamer Fantastic one of the 8 most noteworthy stories (out of 175) in DAW's 2009 anthologies.
• 12/25/09: I have been selected to be a member of Crew 88 at the Mars Desert Research Station! The MDRS is a simulated Mars base in the Utah desert and I will be there January 9-23, 2010. See this blog post for more details.

• 10/20/09: I sold short story "Pupa" to Analog! I also sold audio rights to "Wind from a Dying Star," my first professional sale, to Escape Pod.
• 10/6/09: I sold short story "horrorhouse" to DayBreak Magazine, a new online magazine dedicated to near-future, optimistic SF. It will appear on October 31. I also received payment for my Wild Cards story, though there may be one more round of editorial comments.
• 9/5/09: I got my program schedule for Foolscap. I'll be auctioneering and appearing on a bunch of programming.
• 8/29/09: My Google slaves have discovered a surprisingly thorough bio of me in Russian (Google translation). This led me to the discovery that the Dozois Year's Best SF 24, including my story "I Hold My Father's Paws," was translated into Russian in 2008.
• 8/27/09: I received payment from Analog for my story "Teaching the Pig to Sing." The story will probably appear in Spring or Summer of 2010. Also, a Hungarian Blogger said some nice things about "Titanium Mike." Google Translate renders the last two sentences of this review as "Literary feat: just write a few, and only the best can really cause pleasure released. The story's end as if to seize the smile in our faces, and this is no small achievement." Indeed.
• 8/3/09: I'm heading for Anticipation, the 67th World Science Fiction Convention in Montreal, tomorrow. My schedule is here. Also, in the July Locus, Gardner Dozois said my story "Aggro Radius" was one of the best stories in Gamer Fantastic.
• 7/16/09: Space Magic's Signed Limited Edition is now available from Wheatland Press.
• 7/15/09: I will be one of the pros at this year's Worldcon Writers Workshops. See the link for information about how to sign up. Deadline is July 25, which is soon! Also, Gamer Fantastic, including my story "Aggro Radius," is now available. I picked up a copy at Powell's.

• 6/29/09: "Firewall" and "Sun Magic, Earth Magic" received Honorable Mentions from Gardner Dozois in his annual Year's Best SF.
• 6/23/09: I sold story "Teaching the Pig to Sing" to Analog, my first sale to that market. I am right chuffed. Also, the podcast of I Hold My Father's Paws from Beam Me Up has been re-posted in their archive.
• 6/20/09: Circlet Press's ebook anthology Up for Grabs, including my humorous SF erotica short-short story "Fair Play," is now available. Warning: explicit sexual content. (My story is sexual, but not as explicit as some of the others.)
• 6/9/09: I sold story "Family Matters" to Esther Friesner for her as-yet-untitled anthology about vampires in suburbia. This story is the third in a series that begins with "Midnight at the Center Court" in Witch Way to the Mall, Esther's anthology about witches in suburbia, which just hit the shelves. I also gave an interview to local journalist T. K. Gilb which should appear as one or more articles on examiner.com at some point in the future.
• 5/14/09: The podcast of "Titanium Mike Saves the Day" is now up at StarShipSofa (also available via iTunes).

• 5/3/09: I have been selected to write one of three new stories in a hardcover reissue of Wild Cards Volume One!
• 4/23/09: I'm now a member of the Wild Cards consortium! Also, I sold audio rights for "Charlie the Purple Giraffe Was Acting Strangely" to The Drabblecast, who did such an excellent performance of "Babel Probe". I've also received my author copy of Nebula Awards Showcase 2009, which has a gorgeous cover and includes my Nebula nominee "Titanium Mike Saves the Day." And I've received my preliminary program schedule for Wiscon.
• 4/4/09: I've been invited to participate in a Science Fiction Panel on Thursday, Apr 16 from 6 to 8 at the Mt. Hood Community College Library, part of National Library Week. Free and open to the public.

• 3/29/09: My story "Galactic Stress" has been reviewed at BestScienceFictionStories.com ("it was filled with totally cool ideas that gave me gadget envy!"). I also received galley proofs for my story "Aggro Radius" in Gamer Fantastic.
• 3/18/09: I have a short essay in the latest "Mind Meld" at SF Signal. This one's about taboos in SF. Also, I will be giving a talk at the Library of Congress at noon on April 9, part of their "What If..." series.
• 3/6/09: My story "At the Twenty-Fifth Annual Meeting of Uncle Teco's Homebrew Gravitics Club" has been posted on the Reno in 2011 Worldcon bid website.
• 2/26/09: My story "Galactic Stress" has been published in Diamonds in the Sky, an online anthology that is free for everyone to read; I have an essay in SF Signal's latest Mind Meld, on the topic "what books and writers have influenced you and what influences do you hope to have on future writers;" Space Magic has been reviewed in the April issue of Realms of Fantasy ("Levine is a multitalented author whose fertile, wide-ranging imagination is -- as his title implies -- equally at home in the fields of fantasy and science fiction"); My story "Firewall" has been translated into Chinese, in the magazine "SF King"; the February issue of Realms of Fantasy was reviewed in Locus, where Rich Horton called my story "Joy is the Serious Business of Heaven" "a nice humorous story;" and I received payment for my story "Fair Play" from Circlet Press and galleys of my story "Midnight at the Center Court" from Witch Way to the Mall.
• 12/5/08: Lots of news this week. The December Internet Review of Science Fiction includes Greg Beatty's long and thoughtful review of Space Magic ("this collection makes it clear that David D. Levine is a writer to watch"). The December Locus includes Gardner Dozois's review of Transhuman ("Best story here is by David D. Levine"). I received my contributor's copies of the February 2009 issue of Realms of Fantasy, including my story "Joy is the Serious Business of Heaven" (I love, love, love the illustration they gave it). The audio version of "Sun Magic, Earth Magic" (ably read by BCS editor Scott H. Andrews) was posted at Beneath Ceaseless Skies. A five-minute video of me blabbering incoherently, recorded by Bill Johnson of Willamette Writers at OryCon, was posted on YouTube. And I learned that Aeon Magazine, the next issue of which was going to contain my story "The True Story of Merganther's Run," is suspending publication, but the story is supposed to appear in an anthology, The End of an Aeon, some time in 2009.
• 11/6/08: I came home from World Fantasy Con to find I'd sold humorous fantasy "Overnight Moon" to anthology Strip Mauled, edited by Esther Friesner, and erotica short-short "Fair Play" to anthology Up for Grabs, edited by Cecilia Tan.
• 10/10/08: My story "Sun Magic, Earth Magic" is now available for everyone to read for free as part of issue #1 of the new webzine Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
• 10/1/08: Space Magic has received its first review, a comprehensive and generally positive review in The Fix. Money shot: "I hope that the volume does more to make this very worthwhile writer better known to the reading public."
• 9/30/08: I've been asked to join the faculty of the Iron Springs Writers' Retreat (next June on the Olympic Peninsula); an interview with me has been posted on the Nebula Awards website; my bio has been posted on the website for Wordstock, so I guess my participation there is official; and Danny O'Brien, blogging about my SF in SF reading, referred to me as "The Ted Chiang of Toontown," which is a mighty fine epithet if you ask me.
• 9/29/08: My SF in SF appearance was recorded for Rick Kleffel's "Agony Column" podcast. You can hear it in 3 parts: Nick Mamatas reading his Carver/Lovecraft mash-up, me reading "Charlie the Purple Giraffe", and the following discussion between us and Terry Bisson. It's also available from iTunes.
• 9/13/08: "Titanium Mike Saves the Day" has been translated into Czech, in the Summer 2008 issue of the Czech edition of F&SF. I also just learned that the same magazine translated "Tale of the Golden Eagle" back in 2006.

• 4/7/08: I have been accepted into the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop! This is a NASA-funded "crash course" in modern astronomy for SF writers. Other attendees include Alma Alexander, Steven Gould, Deanna Hoak, Mary Robinette Kowal, Nancy Kress, Jay Lake, David Marusek, and Laura Mixon.
• 2/14/08: Three of my stories are now available for purchase at the Sony eBook store (for the Sony eBook Reader or free eBook Library software on your PC -- not Mac, alas).
• 2/2/08: My short story collection Space Magic will have a signed and numbered limited-edition hardcover edition, available exclusively from Wrigley-Cross Books.
• 1/24/08: I have been accepted to the Taos Toolbox Writers' Workshop! This two-week workshop (in Taos, New Mexico in June), taught by Walter Jon Williams and Kelly Link with special guest lecturer Stephen R. Donaldson, is a "graduate-level" workshop for writers who have already been to Clarion or Odyssey and/or have made some short fiction sales, and has an emphasis on the craft of the novel. It should be a lot of fun.
• 12/8/07: I sold novelette "The True Story of Merganther's Run" to Aeon Speculative Fiction. Issue 12 of Aeon, including my story "Moonlight on the Carpet," is available now. And "I Hold My Father's Paws" got an Honorable Mention in Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, while "Primates" and "The Last McDougal's" got Honorable Mentions in Year's Best Science Fiction.
• 7/10/07: The Year's Best Science Fiction Twenty-Fourth Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Dozois (who is, I'm told, recovering nicely from a quintuple bypass), has its official release today and has already been reviewed at sfrevu.com. I haven't seen a copy yet. This anthology is my first Dozois Year's Best appearance, with "I Hold My Father's Paws". Coincidentally, that same story was just this weekend podcast at Beam Me Up from WRFR radio in Rockland, Maine. The reading, by Ron Huber, begins about halfway into the show. Hope you like it!
• 3/15/07: Illustrator Rachel Stoleru posted a cute picture inspired by "Titanium Mike"; "Tk'Tk'Tk" was translated into Hebrew in the webzine Bli-Panika; "Titanium Mike" is also being translated into Hebrew, in the print magazine The Tenth Dimension; and "Tk'Tk'Tk" will be translated into Romanian, in the fan-produced (but very slick-looking!) magazine Helion.
• 3/4/07: "Titanium Mike Saves the Day" has been reviewed in SFRevu ("a great little piece") and Tangent Online ("an entertaining and engaging work").
